We recently discussed how molding plays a big role in defining your home’s architectural style. But did you know that the condition of your existing molding also has a huge effect on the look and feel of your space? Dirty, scuffed, or chipped trim instantly makes a room feel dated. Even if you paint your walls a beautiful, new color, they still won’t look their best against beat up baseboards and trim. Giving your home’s molding a little TLC with a fresh coat of interior paint is an easy and cost effective way to make your central California home look its best.
White and Bright
There is something clean and classic looking about white baseboards and molding. White or off-white is an exceptionally versatile paint choice that will look great with any wall color you choose.
Select Your Sheen
Baseboards, doors, and window casings have to stand up to a lot of wear and tear. To keep them looking their best we prefer semi- or high-gloss interior paint. This level of sheen has enough binder to form a durable finish that can be wiped down easily.
Repair vs. Replace
Repairing dents to trim is a great way to extend the life and improve the overall appearance of your home. Some trim is simply not worth repairing though. Poorly installed or badly damaged trim should be replaced to match your home’s existing trim. Or you can choose to update all of your home’s interior trim. Since costs can add up quickly from miscalculated cuts, we recommend leaving a job like this to a professional carpenter.
Refresh Your Doors with Paint
While you’re refreshing your molding with a new coat of paint, don’t forget to show your doors a little attention too. Doors are in frequent use and often have the dents and dings to prove it. Consider painting your doors to match or add a little extra interest to your home by painting your doors in a color other than white.
